Povidone-Iodine Prophylaxis and Surgical Site Infection in Appendectomy

Abstract

Objective: to evaluate the effectiveness of povidone iodine 1% solution in reduction of surgical site infection after appendectomy.

Study Design: Randomized control trial

Place and duration: surgical unit Nishter Hospital Multan from 1st June 2018 to 1st June 2019 in one year duration.

Methodology: One hundred and twenty clinically diagnosed patients of appendectomy were selected for study. Patients were divided into two groups by lottery method. Sixty patients were applied povidone 1% solution (cases) and other group of controls were not irrigated with povidone iodine 1% solution. SPSS version 23 was used for data analysis and determination of study variables. P value ?0.05 was taken as significant.

Results: The mean age, weight of patients was 25.91±4.71 years, 59.87±4.87 kg respectively.Wound grading as 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 of control patients were noted as 65.0%, 15.0%, 10.0%, 8.3% and 5.0%, respectively. While, the wound grading as 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 of cases were noted as 75.0%, 11.7%, 15%, 3.0% and 1.0%, respectively.

Conclusion: Povidone iodine solution is very effective in surgical wound care and in reduction of surgical site infection in post appendectomy patients. Less surgical site infection reduces the morbidity and mortality rate.
